Hypnosis for Pain Relief

BBC's One Show presenter Michael Mosley investigates hypnosis for pain relief with Stewart Derbyshire of Birmingham University.

Signals from the nerves are usually translated into a pain response by the anterior cingulate cortex.  The fMRI scan shows hypnotised subjects still receive the signals from the nerves, but the anterior cingulate cortex is no longer translating them into an experience of pain.

This exactly mirrors patients' reports that they can feel something, it just doesn't feel like pain. See Viv having a medium-sized filling using hypnosis instead of anaesthetic here.
